Megan Ward graduated from Anderson University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in communication and a focus in journalism. Ward also had a complementary major in Spanish. She grew up in Boulder, Colorado and has two aunts that attended Anderson, which helped influence her move to the midwest. Ward is married to Kris and has a dog named Ivy. She now works at the Excel Center as a life coach and teaches English to Spanish-speaking students. Ward also dabbles in freelance writing for the Herald Bulletin.
Why did you choose your job at the excel center?
Ward originally started her professional career in marketing communications but was looking for something different. She has always liked non-profit work and wanted to lean into that field. “I actually volunteered at the Excel Center while I was an AU student, so that is how I first heard of it,” Ward said. This led her to where she is today.
Did you always want to be a journalist?
Ward has kept journals since the age of six and says she has always enjoyed writing. She loves sharing other peoples stories and connecting with others in a unique way by using her gift of writing.
What, if any, are the biggest challenges of your job?
“This might be cheesy, but maybe compassion fatigue,” Ward said when speaking about the hardships of seeing individuals with real life struggles and wanting to fix it all. Ward also talked about how the job can weigh on you if you aren't careful and the difficulty of not being able to help in the ways that she wants to.
What does a day in the life of Megan look like, and what are some hobbies of yours?
Staying in touch with her journalism roots, Ward likes to try and write first thing in the morning. She then works an 8-hour day before taking Ivy on a run. After making dinner, they like to sit down for a night of Netflix shows while working on other projects. Ward enjoys hiking and camping: anything to do with being active connecting her back to her Colorado home.
